Estonian Parliament to Address Declining Birth Rate

TALLINN – The Estonian Parliament, the Riigikogu, will convene a conference on March 11th to address the ongoing population crisis within the country. The event, titled “Why Don’t We Have Children?”, is being organized by the Riigikogu’s family and demography support group and will be broadcast live by Postimees. The conference aims to examine the root causes of Estonia’s rapidly declining birth rate, a trend recognized as a long-term strategic challenge for the nation.

Discussions will center on economic factors, societal values, and the dynamics of family relationships. A key focus will be identifying solutions to foster a more family-friendly environment and provide robust support for future generations. “The Estonian birth rate has decreased significantly in recent years, and this decline presents a serious, sustained problem for Estonia,” stated Lea Danilson-Järg, chairman of the Riigikogu’s family and demography support group.

“We intend to gather experts, policymakers, and influential voices to collaboratively explore how to create an environment conducive to starting families and supporting the next generation.”

The conference seeks to understand why the birth rate is falling and to develop strategies for encouraging families to have children in Estonia. —
