Estonian Ornithological Society Seeks Images of Eurasian Sparrowhawk for Educational Use

TALLINN – The Estonian Ornithological Society is soliciting photographic submissions of the Eurasian Sparrowhawk for use in educational materials, marking the bird as the “bird of the year” for 2026. The society selected the sparrowhawk, Accipiter gentilis, to represent the year, recognizing its unique lifestyle and ecological role. The Eurasian Sparrowhawk is primarily an aerial bird, dedicating its life to hunting insects and engaging in mating behaviors.

Ground contact is limited to the brief nesting season, during which the bird constructs nests, incubates eggs, and cares for its young. The society is inviting nature photographers, bird watchers, and anyone with relevant images to contribute to its collection. These photographs will be utilized for educational purposes, providing a visual resource for understanding the sparrowhawk’s behavior and importance within rural Estonian ecosystems.

“We believe these images will be a valuable tool for promoting ornithology and raising awareness about this fascinating bird,” stated a representative from the society. The initiative underscores the society’s ongoing efforts to document and educate the public about Estonia’s diverse birdlife.
