Scammers Adapt Tactics, Remain Persistent Threat to Estonian Residents

Tallinn, Estonia – Jaanus Juhanson, head of the cyber and economic crimes group within the South Governorate’s Criminal Bureau, has stated that individuals attempting to combat scams are consistently outmaneuvered by persistent criminal activity. Juhanson emphasized that scammers are continually evolving their methods, rendering personal vigilance alone insufficient to prevent deception. Recent reports highlight the ongoing issue impacting residents across Estonia.

One individual residing near Tartu, an Estonian citizen, described receiving numerous calls from suspected scammers, primarily during the evening hours as he prepares for sleep. Despite not answering the calls originating from foreign numbers, the interruptions are profoundly unsettling. These calls frequently begin during the transition period between work and rest, causing significant disruption.

Juhanson explained that the tactic—targeting vulnerable times—demonstrates the scammers’ deliberate strategy. “It is no use to be vigilant and attentive yourself,” Juhanson stated. Authorities are continuing to investigate these incidents and urge residents to report any suspicious calls to the relevant law enforcement agencies.

The ongoing challenge underscores the need for continued public awareness regarding the activities of scammers.
