♪ Listen 0:00 Haarlem, Netherlands – The city of Haarlem, Netherlands, is set to implement a ban on public meat advertising, making it the first city globally to enact such a measure. The proposal, spearheaded by the Green Party GroenLinks, aims to restrict meat advertising in public spaces and is anticipated to take effect by 2024, according to reports from the BBC. The initiative stems from concerns regarding the environmental impact of meat production. Ziggy Klazes, a council member for GroenLinks, stated, “Meat production is very damaging to the environment. We cannot say to people that there is a climate crisis and encourage them to buy products that are one of the causes of it.” The city government, with a population of 160,000, is currently evaluating whether the ban will extend to ethically produced meat. Support for the measure has come from the Christian Democratic Party Challenge within the Netherlands. The proposed ban targets meat advertising in public spaces within the city.
