From 1890 to 1892, Eduard Vilde (1865–1933) developed his interest in socially critical themes while living in Berlin and attending lectures from liberal and social democratic figures, according to literary scholar and educational supervisor of the Tallinn Literary Centre, Anneli Leinpere. The work, “The Cold Country,” published in 1947, reflects this period of exploration.
