The Riga City Court has sentenced a woman and her friend to prison following a prolonged investigation into the abuse of a six-year-old boy. The court found the woman guilty of aggravated assault and sentenced her to four years and eight months in prison, with two years of probation supervision. Her friend received a sentence of four years and ten months in prison, also with two years of probation supervision. The case, which began in the summer of 2023 and continued through the spring of 2024, involved systematic physical and emotional abuse of the child by the woman and her friend. The abuse included repeated beatings with belts and hands, verbal humiliation, inadequate nutrition, and intentional infliction of burns. The child also experienced periods of isolation from educational and medical care, as well as restricted contact with family members. Prosecutors argued that the severity of the sentences, approaching the maximum possible under the Criminal Code, was justified by the close relationship between the victim and the offenders, the systematic nature of the abuse, and the long-term harm inflicted upon the child, including threats to his mental and physical health. The Prosecutor of the Eastern Riga Prosecutor’s Office deemed the sentence fair and proportionate, stating she does not intend to file an appeal. Information regarding potential appeals from other involved parties is pending. The case was initially forwarded to the Riga City Court in January 2024.
