China’s Ministry of Defense announced Monday the commencement of military exercises, designated “Joint Sword-2024B,” in the vicinity of Taiwan. The exercises, involving the aircraft carrier Liaoning, are designed to test the ability of troops to conduct joint operations. In response, Taiwan announced it had deployed relevant forces to the area.

The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense condemned the exercises as “irrational and provocative” and stated that “all state officers and soldiers are in full readiness” to safeguard Taiwan’s sovereignty and defense security. Following the initial discovery of the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning in the Bashi Channel, Taiwan maintained a state of alert on Sunday, preparing to respond if necessary. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken cautioned China against using rhetoric surrounding Taiwan’s democratically-elected leader, Lai Ching-te, as justification for provocative actions.

Blinken emphasized the importance of maintaining the status quo and urged neither side to take steps that could undermine it.
