The European Parliament Information Office in Tallinn removed a photo exhibition examining the events surrounding Estonia’s regaining of independence. The exhibition featured imagery related to the 1991 independence movement and questioned the defense of principles on one’s own territory. On August 24, 1991, Estonia celebrated its fourth day of independence.

The statue of Lenin in Tallinn was removed the previous day. Foreign Minister Lennart Meri arrived in Tallinn from Helsinki by ship and was greeted by ETV reporter Kalle Mihkels in the harbor. Mihkels stated, “Welcome to an independent Estonia,” and inquired about the red flag flying on the roof of a harbor building.

Meri responded by pointing to the flag.
